What is Rubato?

Rubato is an album with music for solo piano. Composed and performed by Robijn Tilanus.

"I often get the question: 'What style do you play?' I find that a very difficult question. Because I mainly play in my own style. But if you want to put a label on it, I would say: 'melodious minimal music'. I could also say: 'neoclassical with a touch of minimal music, pop, jazz and Latin'."

Rubato is an Italian word. It means 'stolen' or 'robbed'. I call this album Rubato for three reasons: a musical reason, a current reason, and a very personal reason. All three reasons are described in the booklet that comes with the CD.

The story behind Rubato

For a long time I hesitated whether to make that third reason (the very personal reason) public. Some of my friends said: 'That's too personal! Keep that just for yourself and a few friends.' Other friends said: 'This story is moving and urgent. It deserves to be heard.' So I kept hesitating for a long time.

Eventually I was persuaded after watching the documentary 'Tycho in de psychiatrie'. In the very first episode we hear the story of Jeroen and his girlfriend: and that is so similar to the story of Simon and me! Jeroen's tears moved me to also share my story.
