Who is it for?

The Klankduikbaken Training is for you if you recognise yourself in the following:

  • You know what tonediving is.
  • You realise that tonediving can be of enormous positive value to people. You know that tonediving can help you feel your inner strength, get into flow, be in the moment and experience connection (with yourself, with your sound, with the world). A sound dive can comfort, heal, bring joy and make people happy. Musicians start to play with far more soul, ease, expression and joy; the beauty of their sound grows enormously through tonediving. A sound dive can work wonders.
  • You would like to deepen your own tonediving skills (a movement inwards). And to learn how to move ever more effortlessly, naturally and joyfully from a sound dive to a longer improvisation (or to an existing composition), while keeping the intensity.
  • You would like to help spread tonediving in the world (a movement outwards). You would like to learn how to teach people to tonedive in a joyful, inspiring and simple way, and how to encourage them to do it every day.
  • You would love to learn how to tonedive together with a small or larger group. You would like to learn to be a 'klankduikbaken' (a tonediving beacon): a beacon who inspires, keeps the quality high, has tips for possible stumbling blocks, and helps to increase the joy of life in this world.

Diploma

Once you have sufficiently mastered all seven subjects mentioned above, you will receive the (accredited) 'Klankduikbaken' diploma. Assessment takes place using 'block cards'. The intention is that for each subject, for each component, two blocks will be fully coloured: one block is coloured by you when you feel you have sufficiently mastered that component; one block is coloured by Improvisation Academy 'De Tonedive' when the academy considers that you have sufficiently mastered that component.

If at the end of the training not all your blocks have been coloured yet, you may continue for as long as you wish to develop your skills in that subject/component, in order to eventually get all blocks coloured and earn your diploma. If desired, support, moral encouragement and help can be provided by Improvisation Academy 'De Tonedive'.

Return days

We think it is important that your knowledge and skills as a Klankduikbaken stay up to date. That is why Improvisation Academy De Tonedive organises a 'return day for Klankduikbakens' every year. If you come to the return day regularly (at least once every two years), your diploma remains valid indefinitely. If you do not come to the return days, your diploma expires after three years.

Study load

The study load of the Klankduikbaken Training can vary considerably per student. At minimum, you are expected to play at least one note with full attention every day: that means a study load of at least 30 seconds per day. In addition, you will (re)read the three course books, develop your skills in the seven subjects mentioned above, and start a small tonediving group that you lead yourself. Depending on your initial skills and learning speed, the total study load can vary between 30 seconds and one to two hours per day.

Musical Intention

When receiving your diploma, you will speak the 'Musical Intention'.

I got the idea for the Musical Intention during the medical exam of our daughter Anna. When receiving their diploma, doctors take the 'physician's oath' (formerly the 'Hippocratic oath'). All doctors in the Netherlands have had to take the physician's oath.

I found it impressive to witness my own daughter's physician's oath. All those young people, who in the presence of an assembly of witnesses, say 'I promise'. They promise, in short, that they will use the knowledge and skills they acquired during their medical studies in an ethical manner, in service of their fellow human beings.

When our daughter also said 'I promise', something went through me. I became very happy. I think it is wonderful that the physician's oath exists.

And I thought: we music teachers / tonediving coaches also have knowledge and skills that can 'make or break' people. As music teachers / tonediving coaches we can make an enormous contribution to the joy of life of many people, by taking them along into the richness and enchantment of making music themselves. Yet who has never met someone who says they were 'broken' by their music teacher? Nobody wants people to become unhappy through music education – and yet it happens.

I think it is important that, when receiving your diploma, you realise that music education is not only about passing on knowledge and skills. It is about more than that.

By speaking the 'Musical Intention' you express that you want to commit yourself to using music to promote joy in life.

FAQ

Which instruments is the training suitable for?

You can participate with any instrument. No instruments are excluded. Singers are also welcome.

Where are the lessons held?

The location of the Training is: Dorpsstraat 39, Uffelte, South-West Drenthe, The Netherlands. A beautiful farmhouse on one hectare of land, a hundred meters from a stunning nature reserve with forest, heather, sand drifts, small pools and two dolmens.

How many participants take part in the group sessions?

The number of participants is a minimum of four and a maximum of eight.

How long does the Klankduikbaken Training last?

The Klankduikbaken Training lasts one school year: from September to June.

How often per year does the Klankduikbaken Training start?

We start once a year, in September.

What educational level is the Klankduikbaken Training?

The Klankduikbaken Training is at HBO level (higher professional education): you are expected to be able to function at least at HBO level. This is mainly about thinking level, and less about diplomas.

What about staying overnight?

Staying overnight is included in the price at no extra cost. Expect basic comfort, not a luxury hotel. Our 200-year-old farmhouse has above all a lot of atmosphere; less luxury… We ask you to bring your own bottom sheet (or sleeping bag liner), pillowcase and duvet cover. We provide duvets, blankets and a bed. If you prefer camping, that's also possible: there's plenty of room on our grounds for your tent or camper. Of course you can also choose to stay at a B&B or small hotel nearby if you want more comfort…

How do I get to Uffelte?

Uffelte is located in the south-west corner of Drenthe. From the Randstad it's roughly an hour and a half by car, depending on your starting point. If you come by train, go to Meppel station. From there take bus 28 towards Dwingeloo. After about fifteen minutes get off at the Anserweg stop in Uffelte (Note: do NOT take the Dorpsstraat stop in Uffelte, as it's much further to walk. Also do NOT take the Dorpsstraat stop in Havelte, as that's the wrong village). From the Anserweg stop it's about a ten-minute walk to Dorpsstraat 39.

I have special dietary requirements. Can the cook accommodate those?

Absolutely! Please let us know your dietary requirements well in advance by email.
